Winter Weather Safety Tips

Be sure to wear:

  • Layers of loose-fitting clothing (wool, fleece, or natural fibers).
  • A water-resistant coat.
  • A scarf or hat that can cover your face and mouth.
  • Mittens or gloves.
  • Water-resistant boots.

Outdoor Activities:

  • Always let your family and friends friends know where you will be before going camping, hiking, or skiing.
  • Avoid walking on ice or getting wet.
  • Pack extra dry clothing.
  • Carefully watch for signs of hypothermia or frostbite.

Driving:

  • Always keep at least half a tank of fuel in your vehicle.
  • Make certain your tires are properly inflated and have plenty of tread.
  • Do not use cruise control when driving in inclement weather.

Home:

  • Never use your stove for heat.
  • Make sure you use an electric space heater with an automatic shut off.
  • Never burn paper in a fireplace.
  • Never leave children unattended near a space heater.
  • Never place a space heater on top of furniture or near water.
