EHS Loading Dock Project

Categories: News

As part of the Environmental Health & Safety office’s continued mission of campus safety, EHS made numerous strategic improvements to a total of twenty-eight (28) elevated loading docks and trash dumpster locations across campus. With input from campus partners and building liaisons, a team from EHS and Facilities Management repaired and upgraded campus loading docks throughout the summer. Docks and trash dumps received numerous improvements, including new gates, repaired railings, heavy-duty bollards, weight-rated chains and signage at each bay. In an effort to continue raising awareness for loading dock safety and protecting individuals from potential falls, EHS recommends following these simple dock safety steps:

·         Conduct a visual safety inspection of the area before using the dock.

·         Always remain aware of dock edges. Do not walk or stand near unguarded edges.

·         Use designated stairways to access elevated dock surfaces. Never climb onto or off an elevated dock.

·         Close gates and replace chains, railings, or other protective devices immediately after completing work.

·         Inspect dock surfaces for spills, uneven edges, and stored materials that may create hazards.

·         Do not use loading docks to enter or exit buildings. Campus docks are designated for loading and unloading only.

·         Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves and suitable footwear such as slip-resistant or safety-toe shoes, as required.

·         Do not empty trash containers or bags into dumpsters from elevated docks unless a protective barrier is in place. Use ground-level access when barriers are unavailable.

·         If an unsafe condition is identified, stop or reschedule loading dock activities and notify the building manager.
