Below are the environmental health & safety training courses required for all employees in the Research Laboratory environment. Job categories include Students, Faculty, Principal Investigators, etc. Supervisors should ensure all personnel have received training.

(PPE) Personal Protective Equipment 2.0In this course, you will learn to identify key facts about PPE and its use, identify characteristics of protective clothing materials and protective suits, identify the level of protection that a user is provided when wearing specific types of PPE, and recognize proper donning and doffing techniques for PPE.1 Hour

Cryogenic SafetyThis course is designed to familiarize employees with the hazards of cryogenic liquids, markings, storage, usage, and handling precautions necessary in order to control the hazards.  Cryogenic materials are commonly used in the workplace for a variety of purposes, such as refrigeration, medical applications, and rocket propulsion. Due to their extremely cold temperatures, cryogenic materials can be hazardous if handled and stored incorrectly. Cryogenic materials are stored in specially designed containers known as dewars and any person handling cryogenic materials must wear personal protective equipment.1 Hour

Radiation Producing Devices SafetyThis course is intended for radiation workers handling x-ray and other ionizing radiation producing devices. Topics covered include: Fundamentals of Radiation, Units, Biological Effects, ALARA, Dosimetry, Dose Limits, Forms, Required Postings and Emergency Procedures.

Fire ExtinguisherThis course will address how to prevent fires and recognize fire hazards. It will also discuss what actions to take in the event of a fire, including hands-on proper use of portable fire extinguishers.45 Minutes

Radionuclide SafetyThis course covers the UNC Charlotte Radiation Safety Program and is designed for initial users of radioactive materials (RAM) in laboratories. This course can also serve as a refresher course. Laser SafetyThis one-hour course is designed to provide awareness of the fundamentals of Class 3B (moderate) and 4 (high-power) lasers or laser systems. The content in this course is designed to comply with the intent of the applicable regulatory requirements. Learner objectives are to: discuss what a laser is and how a laser works, name the types and classes of lasers, describe non-beam laser hazards, recall the biological effects of a laser on the human body, and identify types of control measures.1 Hour
