Students
Welcome, Students!
A warm welcome to both new and returning students! As you settle in for the new academic year, the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Office is here to support you in all your endeavors, from the residence halls to the research lab. Our top priority is your well-being, and we believe that a safe campus is a successful campus.
This message is a quick reminder of the key resources and best practices available to help keep you and your fellow students healthy and safe. Your active participation is the most important part of our campus-wide safety culture!
Safety in Academic Spaces
Whether you’re working in a chemistry lab, an art studio, or a workshop, your academic experience is enriched when you practice good health and safety habits.
- Follow the Rules: Always pay close attention to safety instructions provided by your professors, teaching assistants, or lab managers.
- Use Proper Gear: Wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses, gloves, or lab coats, whenever required.
- Report Concerns: If you see something that looks unsafe—a broken piece of equipment, a chemical spill, or a potential hazard—report it immediately to your instructor.
Safety in REsidence Halls
While we hope you’ll never need it, being prepared for an emergency is an essential skill.
- Know Your Location: Take a moment to identify the nearest fire alarm, fire extinguisher, and emergency exits in your frequently used buildings.
- Emergency Alerts: Make sure your contact information is up to date with the university to receive emergency alerts.
- Building Emergency Evacuation Plans: Familiarize yourself with building emergency evacuation plans. They provide specific information to ensure you are prepared for a building fire emergency.
Your role as a safety champion
The best safety programs are a team effort. You are a crucial part of our campus community, and your choices matter. By being aware, responsible, and proactive, you’re not only protecting yourself but also everyone around you.
