Lockout/Tagout – The Control of Hazardous Energy

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte Lockout/Tagout Program is designed to comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements as outlined in 29 CFR 1910.147. This program covers the servicing and maintenance of machines and equipment in which the unexpected start-up or energization of the machine or equipment could cause injury or harm to employees.

What you need to know

  • You must be enrolled in the Lockout/Tagout program prior to performing work on a machine or equipment that requires lockout/tagout. Contact EHS to determine enrollment status.
  • A specific red lock must be provided to the employee prior to performing lockout/tagout
  • Training is required initially and periodically thereafter
  • Locks and tags must only be removed by the authorized employee who applied the lock and/or tag
  • The servicing of machines or equipment must be in accordance with manufacturer requirements
